Promote reading is one of the best ways to develop children’s cognitive skills. The process of reading is an entirely gradual one. All kinds of factors are involved. From physiological to psychological and emotional. For this reason, it is essential that children are introduced to reading from an early age.

According to the study published by David Kidd and Emanuele Castano, reading narrative fiction helps people develop greater empathy. Also, social perception and emotional intelligence. This is a consequence of the fact that thanks to literature we are able to let our imagination run wild and put ourselves in the place of the

In addition, the Ministry of Culture has launched the Plan for the Promotion of Reading. This plan aims to turn reading into a real social habit. Public administrations, civil organisations, families, schools, universities, libraries, writers, translators, publishers, printers, bookshops… All of them must contribute to the promotion of reading from their competences and resources.

They have made bookmarks with all kinds of materials and pop-ups. They have also created calligrams, theatrical performances and games such as “Story Dice”. They also created a large mural of quotes and held a Book Fair where no one was left without a book and where the winners of the literary competition organised to celebrate Book Day (Rodrigo Baena, Leire Goicoechea, Jorge Sánchez, Alicia Gómez, Valeria Luengo and Irene Pereira) were announced.

Tips for promote reading

Getting children into the habit of reading can be a difficult task. This is because it requires the involvement of parents, teachers and even the rest of the family. For this reason, it is important to follow a series of tips to promote reading:

  1. Firstly, do not impose reading. If you force them to read, you will achieve the opposite effect and they will not perceive it as something to enjoy but to reject.
  2. Understand reading as a game. It is necessary to teach them the playful and friendly side of reading. In this way, you will get them to approach it on their own initiative.
  3. Give them freedom of choice. It is very positive for children to select the book they want to read from among the books adapted and recommended for each age group.
  4. Establish a daily routine. It is vital to find a daily space for reading. Creating a habit is the best way to encourage reading.
  5. Finally, set an example. If children see their parents, grandparents or teachers reading and enjoying a book, they will see the way to imitate them.

  2. Also, it exercises the brain. Reading has a direct effect on their brain activity.
  3. This is another advantage. It promte curiosity. When they read a story they ask themselves questions, they want to know more about the characters or what is happening.
  4. Moreover, it increases concentration. They will learn to stay focused on a task for long periods of time.
  5. Finally, it develops imagination and creativity. Through reading they can be transported to other worlds, places or times.
