6th Grade inquiry

Within the methodology of the International Baccalaureate and the Unit “Turn off the lights”, our 6th graders have learnt about the methods of separation in Physics (distillation, filtration, decantation and magnetization) by experimenting in the lab.

Through elements and practices common in real life, our students have reflected on it and have obtained a significant and lasting learning as it is shown in the video.

Inquiry in the International Baccalaureate

The IB Primary Year Programme (PYP), aimed at children from 3 to 12 years old, implemented at Eurocolegio Casvi International Private School, focuses on the child’s integral development and on his or her capacity of inquiry and discovery, both in the classroom and in the world around him or her.

The IB Primary Year Programme (PYP) It is carried out through transdisciplinary themes that help our teachers develop a complete program of inquiry: investigations of important ideas, which require a high level of students’ participation, and that are broad in scope and depth.

Thus, students who learn in this way begin to reflect on their roles and responsibilities in relation to learning, and become actively involved in their education. The aim is for them to be able to work in a variety of ways: both independently and in groups, in order to get the most out of their learning.

Inquiry as the key to learning

At this stage, inquiry is the key to learning because, at Casvi, our students learn through research, asking questions… They do it, moreover, in a deep way, in order to achieve lasting learning (valuable outside the classroom and for life).

Through this constructivist, interdisciplinary and, above all, very conceptual learning, the main skills and abilities of our students are reinforced in some cases, and discovered in others: musical, artistic, sports, technological… We must find what each child is good at and promote it.

This is a very different way of encouraging our students’ learning than that of the traditional Spanish educational system. At Eurocolegio Casvi, the student is the center of the educational process, while the teacher goes from being a simple transmitter of knowledge to a guide of that learning.

All of this facilitates what is our main objective: to prepare our students to reach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme with all the guarantees of success, so that they can opt for a university education with the best grades.

A work that leads us to an IB student profile (inquirers, open-minded, informed and educated, thinkers, good communicators, honest, reflective, bold, caring and balanced).

The inquiry skills acquired will lead our students to carry out a culminating project of the PYP, which is an exhibition carried out in 6th grade, and that will prepare them for the elaboration of the one they will later have to do in the IB Diploma Programme.
