100% pass rate in the Diploma Programme. What are the exams like?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) assesses students’ work as direct evidence of their level of achievement against the objectives set for Diploma Programme (DP) courses.

The DP assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered the advanced academic skills to meet these objectives. Examples include:

  • Analysis and presentation of information
  • Evaluation and argumentation
  • Creative problem solving

Basic skills are also assessed. These are:

  • Retention of knowledge
  • Understanding of key concepts
  • Application of standard methods

In addition to academic skills, assessment in the DP promotes an international attitude and intercultural skills, where appropriate.

Student outcomes are determined by measuring student performance against pre-established standards, rather than against the work of other students.

Use of internal and external evaluation to achieve 100% pass rate

In the DP, the IB uses both internal and external evaluation.

External evaluation (100% pass)

Examinations form the basis of assessment in most courses. This is due to their high levels of objectivity and reliability.

They include the following:

  • Essays
  • Structured problems
  • And short answer, data response, text response, multiple choice study questions (although these are rarely used).

Internal evaluation

In most courses, teacher assessment is also used. This includes:

  • Oral work in languages
  • Also fieldwork in Geography
  • We cannot forget laboratory work in Science
  • Investigations in Mathematics
  • And artistic performances
