Curiosity, discovery and a lot of excitement. This has been the first experience of enquiry in preschool for our 2 year old students in the First Cycle at Casvi Villaviciosa. A project about means of transport that has allowed them to explore, learn and share what they know with their classmates. This has allowed them to prepare for their entry into the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate.
DISCOVER WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNT IN THEIR FIRST ENQUIRY
They themselves, with enthusiasm and naturalness, explain in this video everything they have discovered about the means of transport.
A DISCOVERY-FILLED EXPERIENCE OF ENQUIRY IN INFANCY
At Casvi Villaviciosa, we believe that it is never too early to learn to think, question and communicate. For this reason, our students in the First Cycle of Preschool Education have lived their first experience of enquiry in Preschool Education. In this way, they have anticipated the active and reflective methodology of the Primary School Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate, which they will officially begin in the first year of the Second Cycle.
On this occasion, the thread running through their research was a very attractive topic for them: means of transport. Based on this proposal, they worked actively and playfully to observe, explore and share what they knew and what they discovered.

MEANS OF TRANSPORT: AN OPEN DOOR TO DISCOVERY

The 2 year olds have been able to discover how we move by land, sea and air. Using different resources, they have learnt to identify different means of transport. They also learnt to recognise their sounds, shapes and functions. And finally, to distinguish them by their usefulness and environment.
Durante la actividad, surgieron preguntas como: ¿por qué el avión no se cae? ¿Dónde duermen los trenes? ¿Los coches también vuelan?
Questions that, far from having immediate answers, were the driving force behind the learning process.
COMMUNICATING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED: YOUR FIRST PRESENTATION
One of the most moving moments of this enquiry was the final exhibition. Each student presented a means of transport with visual support to their classmates, explaining in their own words what they had learned.
This seemingly simple activity represents a breakthrough in its development:
- Reinforces verbal and non-verbal language.
- It promotes self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Initiates learning to respect the ideas of others.

PREPARED FOR THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PEP)
This first enquiry in Preschool is the natural beginning of a way of learning that will accompany them throughout their schooling. From next year, when they join the 1st year of the Second Cycle of Infants, our pupils will officially begin their journey in the Primary Years Programme (IB).
A methodology that focuses on the child as the protagonist. It integrates different areas of knowledge in real projects. And that develops, from very early on, the attributes of the IB profile: inquirers, thinkers, communicators, caring…
